In-Office Procedures Q & A

What are in-office procedures?

In-office procedures are tests for diagnostic purposes or treatments for women with reproductive system concerns performed right in the clinic. Dr. Vinokur uses the latest equipment and provides a comfortable environment to ensure the procedures are performed as efficiently as possible.

What in-office procedures are available?

Dr. Vinokur offers a variety of in-office procedures, including:

Hysteroscopy is an internal exam you may need if you have:

  • Heavy periods or menstrual cramping
  • An abnormal Pap smear result
  • Post-menopausal bleeding
  • Fibroids or polyps on your uterus
  • Problems with conception or miscarriages
  • Problems with your contraceptive IUD

Dr. Vinokur inserts a thin tube called a hysteroscope with a light on the end into your vagina to allow her to examine the cervix and uterus. She can take a sample of cells or a biopsy for testing at the lab, and can also perform a sterilization procedure for permanent birth control, or a D&C to remove internal tissues.

Endometrial ablation

Endometrial ablation involves removing the lining of your uterus, the endometrium. Dr. Vinokur uses this procedure to address heavy menstrual bleeding by stopping the excessive blood flow and associated pain. She uses the NovaSure radiofrequency energy system for fast and effective endometrial ablation.

Pap smears

A Pap smear is a regular screening test that highlights the early changes in cells that could be a precursor to cervical cancer. If your test results show any changes, Dr. Vinokur may recommend a further procedure.

A colposcopy is similar to having a Pap smear, but Dr. Vinokur uses a special instrument called a colposcope to examine your cervix in detail.

Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)

LEEP involves the use of a thin wire that’s heated by an electrical current. Dr. Vinokur uses the heated wire to remove cervical cells.

Cone biopsy

If you need a cone biopsy to extract a larger section of tissue, Dr. Vinokur can also perform this in-house using LEEP.

Nonstress test (NST)

An NST is a noninvasive method of checking the health of your baby if you’re overdue, have complications, or the baby seems to be moving less frequently. The nonstress test is so-named because it doesn’t cause any stress to your baby. It just records movement, heartbeat, and any contractions to make sure all is well.

Pregnant women have regular ultrasound scans to check the growth, development, and position of the baby. You may also need an ultrasound to help diagnose the cause of a gynecological or urinary tract concern.

Blood work

Dr. Vinokur uses the results of blood work to help her ensure the health of pregnant women, identify the culprits of patients’ symptoms, and check for nutritional deficiencies.

If you have any obstetrical or gynecological concerns, don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Vinokur. She can diagnose and treat a vast array of gynecological conditions from the comfort of her office. Call North Fulton OB-GYN to make an appointment or book a consultation online.
